Mini LED or OLED? You need to master the knowledge of monitors

Time: 2023-10-21
Since the replacement of CRTs by liquid crystal displays, the structure of displays has undergone tremendous changes. Mini LED backlight technology, as the "top stream" of LCD displays today, has been favored by major display manufacturers and users since the beginning of this year, and is considered the next generation mainstream display technology. As a high-end display technology, with the increasing popularity of Mini LED displays, it is inevitable to form a competitive situation with OLED displays. So, what is the difference between Mini LED and OLED? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both technologies? Below, the author will provide a specific analysis for everyone.

01 Display Principles of Mini LED and OLED

Mini-LED is essentially an LCD screen, still composed of backlight modules, liquid crystal layers, color filters, and other structures. The LCD screen's ability to emit light mainly relies on the presence of backlight modules, which are composed of many sequentially arranged light beads. Compared to traditional backlight, Mini LED backlight technology reduces the size of each lamp bead to 50-200 microns. This can accommodate more light beads in the same size panel content, bringing the benefit of significantly improving the screen display brightness.

Not only that, as the number of panel light beads increases, more independent light control zones can be divided within the backlight module. The increase in the number of independent light control zones allows for more detailed local brightness adjustments on the display, resulting in a higher display contrast on the screen. Moreover, due to the fact that Mini LED backlight technology adopts a straight down backlight scheme, it can also avoid the common light leakage phenomenon in traditional LCD displays.

Looking at OLED again, we can actually see the significant difference in structure between the two. The OLED panel itself is composed of a large number of organic light-emitting diodes, which have the characteristic of self illumination. Based on this characteristic, OLED displays achieve infinite contrast by turning off corresponding pixels when presenting black images. Therefore, theoretically, OLED panels can achieve infinite high contrast.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of 02 and 02

If the two are compared, Mini LED backlight has a greater advantage in brightness, and currently mainstream Mini LED displays can generally achieve peak brightness of over 1000nits. At the same time, it also continues the strong durability of LCD screens, which have a longer lifespan compared to current OLED technology. However, in terms of disadvantages, like traditional LCD screens, they use LCD deflection when presenting black images, so they cannot achieve pure black like OLED displays, but infinitely approach black gray.

As mentioned earlier, OLED panels can present a more profound pure black color. Thanks to their structural advantages, the screen color will also appear more transparent compared to Mini LEDs. And when OLED performs color conversion, the electrodes directly act on the pixels, thus achieving a grayscale response speed of 0.1ms, which is also not achievable on current LCD screens.
